An Impetus for the Study of Central and Eastern Europe

On July 20, 2012, a ceremony launching the establishment of the China Society for Emerging Economies (CSEE) was held at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). This academic organization was originally called China Society of Eastern European and Central Asian Economies, founded in the 1990s.

In the past one or two decades, emerging economies have become a buzzword all over the world. Particularly, during the international financial crisis, the emerging economies played an important role in leading the world out of its economic recession.

Some of the countries in Central and Eastern Europe such as Poland are regarded as emerging economies. The establishment of the CSEE will give an impetus to the study of Central and Eastern Europe in China.

In order to promote the study of Central and Eastern Europe, the Institute of European Studies at CASS set up a research division in 2011.Prof. Kong Tianping, an expert on Poland and some other East European nations, acts as its head.
